IMAGES
of SADDLEWORTH
Saddleworth, which is still a part of the historic County of Yorkshire, is now administered by the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham in Lancashire. The area is a group of villages located to the west of the Pennines and is characterised by its textile heritage and farming tradition. The thin soil, elevation and exposure to the elements allowed little more in farming terms than the raising of sheep, but the combination of a plentiful supply of wool, high rainfall and soft water promoted a vigorous textile industry - to which the area owes its wealth - which lasted well into the 20th century The landscape of Saddleworth is little changed today. The stone built villages and dry stone walls remain as a lasting tribute to those people who had the faith to build them. We hope that these images do them justice |
