Park Bridge was an industrial village established in Lancashire at the end of the 18th Century by Samuel Lees and his wife Hannah, and was run by the Lees family until the eventual closure of the company - known as Hannah Lees & Sons following Samuel's death in 1804 - nearly 200 years later. Park Bridge was possibly the longest surviving and most successful industrial community in Lancashire, incorporating its own foundry, cotton mill, gas plant and coal mine. A church, school and worker's institute were built on the site for the company' s employees, as were a number of workers' cottages. The quality of the company's products was renowned - iron rivets forged at Park Bridge were used in the construction of both the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Sydney Harbour Bridge. |
